Fanboy Wars: Gundams vs Transformers
by Lem Dagalea
In a gigantic battle of epic proportions that utilizes out-of-this-world technology, who would win: Gundams or Transformers? Since Gundams and Transformers have a long history of series, movies, and such, it is safe to say that they are arguably the most popular fictional mechs in the world. However, as much as I’d like to cite all versions, the text can only allow me two sources: Gundam’s latest series, Gundam 00, and Transformers from the 2007 self-titled live action film. We have heard non-geeks carelessly say that Gundams and Transformers are the same thing, but that’s just hasty generalization. Despite numerous similarities, both Gundams and Transformers have advantages over each other.
Let’s go to the points that make them indistinguishable. Both are overwhelmingly large mechs, towering six stories or more. They take humanoid forms as well – most of the time anyway. Also, they both use advanced particle weaponry and state of the art technology. Last, but not the least, they are both equipped with armor plating so tough that conventional firearms are rendered useless against them. This is the reason why it is so fun to watch them take bullets like nothing and fight against another Gundam or Transformer in an intense duel.
Now, what exactly makes them different? In terms of art style, Gundams are definitely (and obviously) Japanese. Transformers illustrations, on the other hand, are dominated by American artists. Referring to their respective storylines, Gundams are man-made, be they super units of mass-produced, while Transformers are of an alien race. In stating the obvious, not all Gundams can transform, and even if they can, they usually turn to another type of Gundam, not a vehicle. Transformers, however, are called as such because they can transform into a specific vehicle. While skilled pilots are needed to utilize Gundams, Transformers are sentient, and can act on their own accord. Gundams are solar-powered, granting them near-infinite energy. The Transformers, on the other hand, rely on their crystalline particle generators that require rest from time to time.
To sum it up shortly, Gundams and Transformers each have their own perks that make fans, hardcore or not, love them. Though similar in a number of ways, Gundams and Transformers have distinct and awesome characteristics that make them distinguishable. We can safely assume that both their similar and unique traits have truly earned their popularity and prestige. This leads to tons of fan fictions that make Gundams and Transformers clash. In my personal, opinion, Gundams are slightly better than Transformers, given their large area of improvements and upgrades and opportunity of mass production. However, we should note that both mechs’ traits differ from one series to another, making my opinion questionable since I only cited two sources. In the end, we may never know which side will win in this dream battle. We can only be sure that these giant robots will continue to be sources of inspirations for other mech-oriented stories that might never live up to the ongoing legend.
